Summer is just around the corner. While you may have visions of lying in the sun dancing in your head, it’s still important that you consider ways to protect your skin from the sun’s powerful rays. Our Phoenix, AZ, dermatologist, Dr. Tamela Tripp offers up some tips on how to keep your skin protected all summer long.
Wear Sunscreen Everyday
No matter whether you are only going outside for a half hour or it’s cloudy out, you should still apply sunscreen before going outside. Even if it’s an overcast day, the sun is still present, exposing you to harmful rays. Opt for a sunscreen that has at least an SPF of 30 and that provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Make sure to apply sunscreen about 20 minutes before going outside.
Know When to Reapply
Most people don’t know exactly how to use sunscreen properly. Maybe you dabbed on a touch of sunscreen before you went outside and assumed that would be enough for the day. You want to be generous when applying sunscreen and you’ll want to reapply about every two hours. If you’ve been sweating or swimming you’ll want to reapply sunscreen immediately after.
Wear Protective Clothing
Remember that the skin around your ears and eyes are thin and delicate. You certainly don’t want skin to burn, particularly in these areas. That’s why you should always wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat whenever you are outdoors. These items may seem silly, but they won’t be when you are protected against skin cancer.
Visit Your Dermatologist
Whether you noticed that a new mole cropped up or you just want to be preventative, it’s always a good idea to visit our Phoenix skin doctor at least once a year for skin cancer screenings. It’s painless and won’t take long, and the exam could just end up saving your life.
You may want to talk to us about how often you should come in for these exams, particularly if you have a personal or family history of melanoma or other forms of skin cancer. You should also be performing self-exams once a month to check for any new growths or changes in your skin.
