What is eczema?
Eczema, sometimes referred to as dermatitis, is an inflammatory problem with the skin. It is a broad diagnosis that can include symptoms like redness, itching, swelling, blistering, flaking or bleeding. It is often present on the hands, scalp, neck and the insides of joints. It can be caused by an allergic reaction to a particular chemical or material; it may also be brought on by dry winter air. Eczema can also appear to be idiopathic (without known cause). Although eczema is not life-threatening, it can be very uncomfortable and lead to localized infection if the affected area has an open wound and is exposed to bacteria.
How do I know if I have eczema?
An itchy rash is often the first reason why people visit their Phoenix dermatologists at North Mountain Dermatology. These rashes can be flat or raised, and may have blisters or other lesions. In most cases, the rashes are recurrent. A type of eczema called seborrhoeic dermatitis is closely related to dandruff and can cause yellowish, flaky, dry patches to develop on the scalp and around the face.
It’s not fully understood what causes eczema to develop, but it is important to be treated. Whatever the cause of your dermatitis, the medical staff at North Mountain Dermatology in Phoenix will be able to work with you to find a solution that is both comfortable and effective. Give us a call today!
