FAQ: Windows 10 LTSB explained | Computerworld – Want to add to the discussion?
Although Microsoft always opined that LTSB was suitable only as a minority choice – one for special situations, such as machines that simply should not be frequently touched, like those that control windows 10 ltsb vs pro reddit free download systems or ATMs – early in Windows 10, there was significant talk among IT administrators about choosing LTSB for broad swaths of their PC inventory. Each dwnload of the plan comes as a surprise to customers. Each update перейти to have its months in the sun, then fade away as its support expired. Sign In Register. Da letztere aber, pto gesagt, eine Absolutheit ist, stehen wir vor einem Paradoxon!

The supported lifecycle isn’t all that relevant. When it comes to Windows, people usually cite the “necessity” of Windows Updates, but the value of security patches and ongoing updates to a system is somewhat overrated.
Even the most egregrious security vulnerabilities can easily be avoided with some very basic security practices on the user’s part. What empirical data is there to support this claim? The reason I question it is because people have made the same claim for pretty much every single release of Windows.
XP isn’t as reliable as my old trusty Windows 98 SE, Windows 98 isn’t as reliable as Windows 95, Windows 95 just isn’t up to snuff compared to Windows 3. Not sure what you mean by availability. Can you demonstrate how these “Free to play” users reduce costs? Can you demonstrate how that reduction in cost is linked directly to “service packs” or at least explain what you mean when you say Service Packs since Windows 10 doesn’t receive them, unless you’ve decided to call feature updates Service Packs.
How does that factor in to Microsoft’s evil plot to somehow reduce costs? This sounds like unfounded assertions that have been accepted because you really want them to be true but without any strong supporting evidence. Not to mention the danger in public Wi-Fi networks. The admin won’t approve it. It’s like not injecting vaccinations.
In some countries vaccination is compulsory by law. From the perspective of software engineering, you need time for each new release of OS to settle down with debug. Even Microsoft knows this. The proof is that they offer two different channels: one as Semi-Annual, and another as Semi-Annual Targeted. Microsoft now roll out feature updates into the “Semi-Annual Channel Targeted ” with poor quality control.
They use the guinea pig users to find bug, so they can prepare fixes for the “Semi-Annual Channel” at lower cost. You can’t reliably block feature updates. It’s at the mercy of Microsoft to receive forced feature updates. I also remember earphones bought in the s that I used till , then I lost them.
Same with old Nokia phones, Sony Walkmans and so on. The global economy in the internet age doesn’t work with products that last, no matter how much money you spent on them. Pro gives you everything a home user can want. You got lucky that someone sold you a single licence. What ads is it that everyone is getting?
I think I have seen an ad for Office whatever current version or something once between two pcs running win 10 home since the public beta. And it’s not. I don’t have a single ad on my PC.
Suggestions turned off and it’s just bliss. Bloatware can be uninstalled. It’s just annoying to have to do this in the first place, but we’ll have to endure it. Windows 10 Pro, even Windows 10 Enterprise comes out of the box with some games and shortcuts pointing to paid products from the Microsoft Store that automatically install themselves unless you do some PowerShell scripting during deployment.
To me, that sure doesn’t feel like a Professional or Enterprise version. You don’t want games on a corporate system or links to app listings the business has no intention to acquire.
Sure, you can remove them through scripting, but you’re making more work for the deployment team to remove stuff that should arguably not be there in the first place. So much this. People that have little to no experience with windows will not never know the feeling of running an OS without ads, bloat or even forced semi annual upgrades. Just like Windows 9 modified 8.
I can disable unwanted stuff on Pro and I still get the newer features on my personal machine. LTSB in my workflow would be for purpose assigned workstations, backup hard drives and VMs that I don’t want frequent windows update to create offline time or affect stability. Quite happy. I even have Photoshop CC and all of the office apps on their, and they all work a dream. It’s the best version, imo, really fast, light and stable even when I had it installed as non LTSB on my pc.
It’d be nice if you could read. Unstable updates and telemetry. I would also like to add: annoy-ware, beg-ware, bloatware, spyware, resetting settings and default applications, and inconsistencies in the UI. It’s not all about spy. It’s also about having to do clean re-installations from time to time.
This is even worse than regularly flashing an Android phone. I understand that younger people may have the time and passion to do this on a semi-annual basis and don’t mind dealing with issues, but some people prefer not to spend their lives doing this.
Why do you have to reinstall from time to time? Since the Win 10 beta, I have been running 10 on two machines. One a clean install the other was an upgrade install the wife did not want to clean install.
I have reinstalled Windows 10 once since then on the clean installed box. That was only because of an SSD boot drive upgrade. For example, “in-place” feature update of has caused BSOD on all my machines, and half of my machines have a drive letter assigned to the recovery partition. About two thirds of them run into issues with freezing start menus. Color calibration of monitor is also broken, with inconsistent color spaces among different applications. Even temperature sensor reading programs can halt the system.
Minutes that you could afford easier than the amount of money you spent and the amount of time wasted to LARP and equate windows versions to social classes. It’s not just the spying itself, though the collectors do build a very thorough profile of their users. It’s also how sloppily they do it. All this collection, still updates break all the time. It really makes you wonder what they’re doing with all this data, and if some people will regret being complacent.
LTSB – Lowest social class. Least amount of features and functionality. Needs effort to install the store and apps, APIs are out of date so many of the newest apps are not compatible. Requires you to download 3rd party software to make the machine decently usable. Home would be like buying a nice house that have everything you want, but it came with 70’s tapestry, some advertisements taped on the wall, along with hidden cameras monitoring your life inside.
Most of that can be fixed remove tapestry and the ads , and you disconnect all the cameras you can find but you’re never certain you found them all.
Lowest social class. I have never had any issues with LTSB in terms of programs not working. Sure, i do not have the “app store” but why would i even want it? I download my programs straight from the developers homepage and have never had any issues. If i did not need an “app store” in windows xp or windows 7 i certainly do not need one now. And never will need for that matter. The ONLY thing i had to do some tricky stuff to get working was the photo viewer, but that took me a couple of minutes and then everything was working as it should.
I use store apps as much as possible due to their increased security. It happens all the time these days were developers start bundling malware or their installer gets compromised, getting things from the store significantly reduces that risk.
Also, it is a hell of a lot easier to manage and update, and if I uninstall, it is gone, no missed files or registry keys left behind. On a fresh install I can just go to my app library, scroll through and hit a few down arrows and be back in business in minutes, rather than digging up different websites, finding the right downloads, unclicking bundled malware options, then dealing with restoring configurations.
I’ve never had any need for UWP apps, i don’t even like the UI of most of them – they look as if they are designed for touch screen, not for mouse cursor. Not sure what kind of programs you use but i’ve never really had an issue with that. I do know that it happens, just look ad uTorrent for instance. Besides i think you’re overestimating how long it takes to download and install a separare program from a homepage.
It probably takes just as long or short time, maybe minutes and then i’m done as well. And on top of that – the Microsoft “App Store” only leaves me to use the programs that they feel they want to allow me to use just like any of these so called “app stores”. For torrents, I use Torrex Pro. Last resort I go and do things the old fashioned way, like for Glasswire.
I’m not overestimating how long to takes to get and install a program the old fashioned way, but I’ve been spoiled by the convenience of the Store. Hell with the newest update I can push a new app to my server without even connecting to it. You make a good point on UWP, but I’ve had issues with it as well. Windows 10 automatically forced an update of that app without my consent, and a dodgy version of Lenovo Vantage messed up driver installations for my laptop, which cost me a fresh reinstallation of Windows.
I can’t afford to allow this to happen from time to time. Who in their right mind will want to install the Store or use those Apps My first job on new Win 10 installations is to get rid of the Store.
Even though I got the store and a few apps I needed installed, many others would not. My torrent client requires , so the based LTSB won’t cut it. Windows has come a long way in the last few years, I’ll give the new LTSC a shot and see how it does for my needs but for now 10 Pro works better. What a joke. You gotta be out of your mind if you consider Store and those crappy “apps” an advantage. The whole reason ordinary people are trying out LTSB is because they think it’s that magical version of Windows 10 that doesn’t suck – more control over updates, options to disable telemetry, no bullshit Store, no preinstalled crapware that keeps reinstalling itself etc.
And in some ways it’s true. But it’s still Windows It still has the ugly and inconsistent UI, and Control Panel is butchered in favor of the awful “Setting” app. But at least it’s a bit more tolerable and easier to set up to make it less annoying.
Too bad Microsoft is too hung up on writing blog posts on how Windows 7 is outdated instead of taking notes or making a decent OS , and you have to get the license in obscure ways or pirate to even get LTSB at all. Your torrent client will be blown out of the water by qBitTorrent, which has been around for years and runs on anything from Windows XP.
They got tired of Enterprises switching to it because the enterprises got tired of Microsoft including bloat and bejewled in their Enterprise level SKU.
We have a business critical software that is sensitive to changes that each Windows 10 updates bring. LTSB is deployed on a minimal set of these systems and it works wonderfully.
We would have stayed on Windows 7, but at some point we would have needed to switch and newer systems do not support Windows 7 anymore.
At one point I considered Ltsb for all our workstations but Microsoft makes it annoying to deal with. You obviously have reasons to be using it. Its really easy finding Office alternatives these days. Also telling someone to just use a workaround for something that is damn near an industry standard is just ignant.
A competent IT will tell you that it will not work by , because Microsoft decided to exclude that version of windows from using that saas.
If there is a rock in your shoe, you do not remove the shoe, but the rock itself. And that finding a good replacement is cheaper and better than replacing the company LTSB licenses for the regular enterprise or proffesional.
Just because something is Industry standard, does not mean there is not a viable mature alternative for it. For example: Photoshop is the defacto for image manipulation software that is available now as a sass. From a long time it was the only thing in the market with such features, but in this more mature market, competitor have made and polished really good alternatives.
The most common one and now famous is Affinity Photo. I understand that it can be an issue for enterprise. If you can’t find the time, then this article should at least get you thinking about why privacy matters. MS advertises LTSC to be run on sensitive hardware in the medical MRIs and financial sectors ATMs , so it would be quite the scandal if private data was being sent back and I believe that in this case, sucking up private info is just not worth it for them.
However, you still have to tweak it to get that max level of privacy. LTSC is the only version one of the few versions of Windows 10 that allows the lowest level of telemetry reporting. It’s in the group policy settings and called something like “0 – Security”.
Official MS info on the different telemetry is worth a read. If you’re interested, I recommend going through a research paper made by the German Federal Office for Information Security. Here’s an article about it with the links to the report. It’s rather technical, but gives you a good idea about what’s going on and especially about how much data is being sent to MS. Now, if you find a way to acquire a legit copy of LTSC as a private non-corporate customer, do let me know.
Enterprise and school edition also allow security telemetry reporting. This version are more easier to obtain but these version include some bloat. The Security level gathers only the diagnostic data info that is required to keep Windows devices, Windows Server, and guests protected with the latest security updates.
They require a minimum of 5 licenses, but they don’t all have to be LTSC. Found some relevant info regarding licenses on spiceworks. Quite convoluted way to get a single pricey license, but okay, didn’t know about this way. Although it does seem a little like a loophole. ISO file so we can download it and give it a whirl? If you just want to check it out, MS offers 90 day evaluation versions. If you’re looking for the full. One of the main requirements is to buy at least five licenses. From what I found, they do not have to be of the same product.
